It’s a tough question to answer, and one I hear all the time: Which paper stock should I choose for my book? First-time publishers need to understand the difference between the paper they purchase at an office supply store versus what is used by a professional printing plant. While paper weights at an office supply store are measured as “bond,” printing plants use a different measurement called “offset.” I won’t get into the details of why bond and offset weights are different for the same type of paper, but just know that if you multiply a bond weight by 2.5, you get the offset weight. For example, the 24# bond paper you purchase at Office Max is the same thickness as a 60# offset sheet used by your printer.

Most black & white books with no photos are printed on either 50# or 60# offset. Going with 50# is adequate for most books and will save you some money. However, if you want your book to have a nicer feel to it, check out the extra cost for 60#. It might be worth it to you.

One thing I cannot emphasize enough - get print samples. There are a couple times when I have had a client tell me they knew exactly what type of paper they wanted to use, but then they were disappointed when they got the final product. Why? A friend of theirs had told them which paper stock to choose, and they ordered their books without ever seeing a paper sample. Don’t make the same mistake!

Choosing paper stock for a book printed in full color is sometimes a little trickier. You may want to go with a glossy paper stock to make any images “pop” a little more. However, glossy stock often feels thinner than standard paper stock.

Most full color books are printed overseas, where a different standard of paper measurement is used - grams per square meter (gsm). To calculate gsm, multiply the offset weight by approximately 1.5. So an 80# gloss sheet in the U.S. would be the same as a 120 gsm sheet overseas. You’ll definitely want a thicker paper stock for your color book versus a black & white book.

I can’t say it often enough: No matter which paper stock you think you want, ask your printer for some samples first.

Always ask for your book covers to include gloss lamination. Standard paperback cover stock is 10 pt. C1S. A C1S cover means that it is coated on one side for durability and to help the colors “pop” a little more. If your book is on the large side, consider bumping up to a 12 pt. cover for extra durability.

If you are not fast enough, this can be fixed through both physical and mental workouts. First you need to figure out mentally why you can not run fast, maybe it was a forgotten memory from long ago or simply a learned behavior. Maybe your coach in pee-wee was always telling you that you were too slow and it was embarrassing. Now as a grownup, you still hear this coach in your head you are too slow. This is a learned behavior and over coming this belief can be difficult alone.

Focus, an athlete needs to be in the zone. A baseball player doesn’t hit 5 homeruns in a row because he was lucky, he is focused. If you are not in that zone, it is hard to perform at your best. Maybe there is pressure from coaches, fans or parents, a loud negative person in the stands, or maybe you simply psyched yourself out before the game even started by worrying you would have a bad game. As you can see, many things can cause you to lose the zone. Identifying what makes you lose focus, and learning new tricks to keep you in the zone. You can become unstoppable, not lucky, but focused.

A sport such as swimming ultimately is all about skill. It is not about who got a good call, but who is simply better, which it true of many other sports. If you can learn to improve your skill level mentally, the physical improvements will fall into place allowing you to create your own luck. To truly be called and athlete you must love not only the game but yourself and your team. All of these things build a better, stronger, more valuable athlete. If you are constantly worrying about how you did in the game or how bad your team mate is then you are doing yourself and team a disservice. If you were always told how bad you are a something or how if you teammate would have just passed you the ball you could have won, you are allowing these experiences to take over the game. Once you learn how to deal with these feelings and memories, you will be an amazing athlete.

Sure you can work out at the gym for hours on end to improve your skills, or you can try to focus on something else during the game, but you have not really dealt with the issue. Most people don’t think of the layout design of their book as an area that can impact the printing cost, but it can have an effect.

Printers print pages in blocks, called signatures. A 32-page signature is most common, so if your page count is divisible by 32, that’s the most economical option possible. However, the general rule of thumb is to try to not print less than a quarter signature of 8 pages. So if your book is 266 pages, see if you can drop a couple pages to get it down to 264. You’ll definitely notice the cost savings for the print run.

To get to an appropriately divisible page count, play around with the margins in your book. Make them a little smaller or a little larger.

Adjust the leading (space between lines). A very small adjustment might be barely visible to the average reader, but it could result in dropping a few pages from your book — saving you money on your print run.

However, before spending too much time worrying about your page count, talk to your printer. It may be that the price difference isn’t worth the hassle of adjusting your layout (although it probably is). Also, if you’re using a digital press, you don’t need to worry about page counts since they don’t use signatures. Other presses may use unusual signature breaks as well.

Be sure, too, that you are printing at a standard trim size. Some standard sizes include 5.5 x 8.5″, 6 x 9″, and 8.5 x 11″. Deviate too much from a standard size and you will generate paper waste on the press. That’s paper the printer has to just throw away, but you still pay for it.

So don’t be afraid to ask for help from your printer sales rep. And shop around. See if the trim size you have in mind might work better for a different printing plant. A second mortgage is basically a loan that you take against the equity that you have already built into your home. This means that in the event of a default, the property is sold and the proceeds are used to pay the first mortgage first, including any legal costs and other costs of the sale. The remaining proceeds are applied to the second mortgage. If there is not enough money remaining from the sale of the home, the second mortgage does not get paid.

A Higher Interest Rate

When determining the interest rate that a lender is willing to loan money out for a home mortgage, he looks at the risk level to him for loaning that money. This is the reason that a high risk borrower with a poor credit history gets charged a higher interest rate than a low risk borrower with a strong credit history.

The same theory also applies to second mortgages. Second mortgages typically are given a higher interest rate, because by definition a lender of a second mortgage is second to be paid off in case of a default, and because there is a greater chance that a default might result in not enough equity left in the home to pay off the second mortgage in full.

2nd Mortgage Terms

In general, the terms given for second mortgages are shorter than those for first mortgages - primarily because the dollar amount of the second is generally much lower than that of the first.

2nd mortgage repayment terms can vary considerably, so look around for the one that is best for you. Then usually range in length from 5 to 20 years, with the majority being 10 to 15 years. A few lenders may even offer a 30 year amortization. Just like first mortgages, the longer the maturity, the higher the interest rate. Conversely (just like first mortgages), the higher the credit score - the lower the interest rate.

Types of Second Mortgages

Just as the length of the second mortgage can vary, so can other repayment terms. The majority of second mortgages are paid back in equal monthly payments with a portion of the payment going to interest and a portion to the principal balance, just like a first mortgage.

The two most common types of second mortgages are the fixed rate and HELOC (home equity line of credit). The fixed rate mortgage is a standard offering. The HELOC is a little unique and has been very popular. This loan type typically calls for interest only payments for the first 5 to 10 years and then the line of credit is frozen at the outstanding balance of the loan. At that point, the loan payments are recast and a standard principal and interest payment is established for the remaining 10 to 20 years. HELOC’s are typically priced with a variable interest rate.

Pricing on the HELOC’s is like other loan pricing; the lower the FICO score and the higher the loan to value, the higher the interest rate.
